The Secret to Dark Academia’s Fall Obsession: Why We Return to It Every Year

This is a question that has probably slipped through the cracks of your mind once or twice. It's probably a question someone has asked you before or maybe not. Maybe you just saw the headline and thought about it for the first time.

Either way, we will be uncovering the why! We're always uncovering the why, but we need to uncover the why because once you get to the why, you get to the understanding. But before that, let's go over what Dark Academia actually is. It's basically an aesthetic that people romanticize their love for education such as, literature, art, goth, or old-word charm.

There really is no secret, there is no secret because we all already know the answer deep down to why we always return to dark academia in fall. Fall is dark, gloomy, it's foggy but it's also relaxing. We find peace in the dark.

We find peace in calm, dark places. Because calm dark places are known for peace. And fall is dark, it's gloomy, the leaves are on the sidewalks, and it gives off a certain vibe that's chill, that's stress free. We like to feel stress-free.

We return to fall's dark academia because it has a label but it's not that. Fall is home to the book girlys. It's home to the ones who love to read because fall is a reading time. And it's a reading time because of the setting, because of the stories that match the setting and because there's just something about dancing or walking in the rain at dusk that brings peace, clarity, and calming.

Fall is also the time where school starts around, that's where the academia comes in. In fall, you always see those calming relaxing videos where you're in a library and you're studying. Why is that?

All my writers out there know this feeling. Well, there is no specific why, but my theory is that because school is starting back up in fall and because fall is the most stressless season of the year. It's where the book girlys and guys come out, it's where everything starts up again, it's where Halloween starts. It's something about a dark place that people love. It's home.

It's not only that, but it's also the aesthetic. Fall in dark academia looks good, it looks spooky, it looks nice. It looks calm.

That's what people love. They love to be in a trance, and fall will get you into that trance. That trance of peace, of calm. Fall is basically calm, it's spooky when Halloween comes around, but it's calming. Fall is a season where everything seems to slow. Your mind slows, your schedule slows, and the aesthetics come out. You see girls shopping in bookstores and going out to coffee places when it's raining in fall.

Fall is messy, it's calm, it's dark, it's gloomy, it's safe. We love to feel calm, so we go back. We go back to being in the fall spirit.

And if I'm being honest, all the book people and the writers and readers are the main one's going back into that fall vibe. Because that's their time to write, to read, to feel free. To feel balanced. To feel at peace. I know this feeling all too well.

There is art in fall. Fall is art. It's writing, it's books.

That's what fall is. Fall has a sense of, let's slow it down. Fall is so beautifully painted into a picture where you instantly feel okay. And that may just be for a season, but I guarantee that you will feel this way when you truly see falls' beauty. When fall comes back around, feel it's peace and we'll see if you agree!
