The Best of Booktok: Recommendations for Every Romance Trope You Won't Be Able to Put Down

With classic tropes like enemies-to-lovers and academic rivalry still hitting the spot for many readers, and modern romances showcasing not-so-fake relationships and a couple of friends with benefits, romance books are a crowd favourite. Here's a list of book recommendations based on some of the book community's most beloved tropes of all time!

Do note that some books have a combination of a few tropes, but in this list, I labelled each book under what I thought was the most prominent dynamic within the story.

1) Enemies-to-Lovers

The God and the Gumiho - Sophie Kim

Themes: Korean mythology, urban fantasy, supernatural mystery

In the mortal realm where creatures of myth live secretly amongst human society, Kim Hani is your typical 'non-human'. She's a gumiho (nine-tailed fox) struggling to keep a normal job at a cafe due to her rather aggressive temperament, all whilst harbouring a grand secret: she's the Scarlet Fox, the notorious gumiho responsible for massacring thousands back in the day. With her belly very much full from her wild feasting, she now endeavours to lead a clean and stable life.

Until Seokga the Fallen gets involved.

Having failed at an attempt to cease the throne of the heavens, Seokga is now, quite literally, a fallen god. He fell from the sky after being stripped of his power and is forced to work as a detective to drive out the many rogue creatures involved in his coup.

When a particularly annoying darkness demon appears and threatens the mortal realm, Hani and Seokga end up working together to solve the case in a maze of deception and trickery.

2) Forced Proximity

Two towns harbour immense rivalry for each other.

Shelburne Falls, home to the Pirates (students of Shelburne Fall High), is posh and Hollywood-inspired, having produced a couple of big names. Most notably, Jared Trent, a former professional racecar driver. His son, Hawke, inherited his father's fame, charm, and notoriety, making him the pride of the Pirates.

On the west side is Weston, the rival town. Home to the Rebels (students of Weston High), multiple gangs, and a much rougher reality. Plagued by constant gang violence and poverty, its where Aro lives, scraping by each day trying to help her family's financials. When a desperate attempt to steal from the Pirates goes sideways, she finds herself in serious trouble and suddenly on the run.

Her only escape was an offer made by the enemies' golden boy, Hawke Trent: a place to stay hidden. As time passes and tension rises, Aro finds herself in a delicate situation, threading a fine line between survival and desire.

3) Academic Rivalry

I Hope This Doesn't Find You - Ann Liang

Sadie Wen is 'that' student, the one with straight A's and impeccable time management. But, as always, underneath the carefully-curated image lies frustration, a world of pressure, and the constant weight of expectations. Her coping mechanism? Writing vent emails to her academic rival, Julius Gong, that are never meant to be sent.

Until they were.

When those emails reached Julius' inbox, Sadie is forced to confront not only her accumulating emotions and frustrations, but also the person she has spent years trying to outshine. In the process, she learns about acceptance and discovers what truly matters to her beyond the pressure to be perfect.

As Ava begins unlocking parts of Alex he never knew still existed; and Alex helping to heal the scars of Ava's childhood, their relationship deepens, revealing raw emotions and disturbing truths that threaten to change everything.

With these letters from her late husband, Holly slowly rebuilds her life. There are moments of endless tears and painful regrets, but with time and the help of Gerry's messages, she learns to grieve, heal, and find hope for the future.

Jenny Go is a talented cellist. Having won numerous music competitions since young, she's set to apply for a prestigious music conservatory. But after a spontaneous night out with a charming boy named Jaewoo, her plan shifts unexpectedly, leading her to attend a performing arts school in Seoul, Korea instead.

There, she shockingly discovers that Jaewoo is a popular Kpop idol from the group XOXO.

As a cellist, nothing matters more than practicing 40 hours a week with no distractions. But with Jaewoo slowly becoming a bigger part of her life, Jenny struggles to balance the strict world of classical music where practicing feels like a full-time job, and the irresistible pull of young love.
