What happens in “The Atypical Family”?

“The Atypical Family” celebrates Chun Woo-Hee, acting as Do Da-Hee, who begins to live among the mysterious and atypical Bok family. The Bok family used to have superpowers including flying and seeing the future, but have lost them due to various eating, sleeping, and mental disorders. The drama's male lead, Bok Gwi-Ju, acted by Jang Ki-Yong, used to have the power to return and relive his happy memories without being able to change them, but fell into acute depression after his wife died in a tragic car accident.

After Do Da-Hee enters the Bok family, she begins to change them and their lifestyle, helping them regain their superpowers. Bok Gwi-Ju realizes that he can once again relive the past, except that he can interact with those in his memories and consequently change the future. As the drama enters multiple plot twists and betrayals, Do Da-Hee is exposed as a swindler, sent into the Bok family with hidden intentions by a loan shark.

Bok Gwi-Ju also happened to have saved Do Da-Hee in a fire that happened 13 years ago. As the plot unfolds, the characters' ulterior motives and intentions are revealed, arising in a climactic bang in the final episode.

Who are the cast of “The Atypical Family”?

Jang Ki-Yong returns after a long military hiatus and makes his post-service debut as the main character of “The Atypical Family”, Bok Gwi-Ju. With Chun Woo-Hee, who has also starred in the popular psychological thriller “The 8 Show”, they create one of the best duos of 2024, with the likes of Kim Soo-Hyun and Kim Ji-Won from “Queen of Tears” and Byeon Woo-Seok and Kim Hye-Yoon from “Lovely Runner”. Both have been praised for their subtle and spectacular acting as the unlikely and unique main characters of this fantasy romance drama.

“The Atypical Family” also celebrates Claudia Kim, who acted in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and the horror, thriller drama “Gyeongseong Creature”. With an interesting array of characters that form “The Atypical Family”'s cast, there is no doubt that their on-screen chemistry and interactions will pull you in and keep you invested in their individual storylines and collective plot.

Will there be a Season 2?

While Season 1 continues running until the end of June 9th, the producers of “The Atypical Family” are unlikely to confirm rumors of a Season 2 of the drama. In general, the probability of Season 2 depends largely on the success and popularity of Season 1. After the final episode of Season 1 is released, producers will watch the national ratings and viewership before deciding on whether to continue to drama with 12 more episodes. Dramas like “Gyeongseong Creature” have followed this pattern, wherein Season 2 of “Gyeongseong Creature” will be released in late 2024.

However, although Season 2 has not yet been confirmed, directors and scriptwriters should already have “The Atypical Family Season 2” written and prepared in advance.

What might happen in Season 2?

The cast of Season 2 will likely remain the same as Season 1, which means we will be seeing all of our favorite actors again. Due to the numerous factors related to writing Season 2, it is almost impossible to accurately determine what will happen, but here's what fans and online forums think will most likely happen.

Many fans have noticed the similarity between “The Atypical Family” and “Parasite”, a Korean movie where the Kim family infiltrates the Park family with the intention of making their lives better, acting as teachers, tutors, and housekeepers for the wealthy Parks. With Bong Joon-Ho confirming a sequel to Parasite, fans will be able to compare the two similar films and speculate on what “The Atypical Family" Season 2 might contain.
