The Golden Globes are the start of the year for movie and film stars, this year taking place on January 11th- less than a week from now. So, what should you know? Well, hopefully, I'll cover it all and answer your questions in this article.
What is it?
The Golden Globes is an awards ceremony created to celebrate cinema, differing from the Oscars as it gives awards to both film and TV. This year marks eighty years since the first Golden Globes awards way back in 1945. It's one of the major awards in the film business, making it an absolute must watch for cinema fans worldwide.
Around 300 entertainment journalists are chosen each year to vote on their favourites. It's a great feeling when you watch and see a favourite of yours win. It gets everyone into that competitive spirit that awards season is known for.
What does it include?
Categories include Best Motion Picture, which appears for four different genres (drama, musical/comedy, animation and Non English language), Best Screenplay, Best Soundtrack and various Best Actor/Actress awards. These are only the movie awards, TV includes: Best Television Series, Best Actor, Best Performance in Stand-Up comedy on television and more.
Recent Notable Wins
Last year marked a ceremony with some shocking results that had fans flocking to social media. 'Emilia Pérez' took home four awards- Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Supporting actress (Zoe Saldaña), Best Original Song ( "El Mal") and Best Non-English Language picture. Saldaña, known for her roles in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and the 'Avatar' franchise, is the first Dominican to ever win a Golden Globe.
Speaking of firsts, another notable win was Sebastian Stan for his role in Aaron Schimberg's 'A Different Man'. Stan won 'Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy', his first major award despite over twenty years in the acting industry. He is also the first Romanian to win a Golden Globe.
This Year's Nominations
This year's nominations include Sinners, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Sentimental Value and many more. You can read the whole list here. The nominees range from gritty drama, to fun comedy, to major trends of the year. You'll be sure to find at least one favourite on the list.
For actors, nominations include Jennifer Lawrence, Renate Reinsve, Oscar Isaac and Michael B. Jordan. Each actor on the list delivered a phenomenal performance in 2025, making them all more than deserving of the award.
Directors include Chloe Zhao, Guillermo Del Toro, Joachim Trier and Ryan Coogler. This list has a mix of first time nominees and previous award winners.
How to watch
if you're like me, and want to support your favourites in the industry, you're probably wondering how you can watch the Globes live, right? Well, if you're in the USA, simply tune in to CBS or Paramount+ at 8pm on Sunday, January 11th. Unfortunately, if you're in the UK, you can't watch the show live, unless you have a VPN. Clips are released within the following days of the ceremony on the Golden Globes social media accounts.
