Sunrise on the Reaping's Casting Announcements- Who's Playing Who?

TV & Film

Sun, May 18

Every Hunger Games fan has been waiting for the casting announcement of Collins' new book, Sunrise on the Reaping. Ever since the book has come out, we've been guessing whether Charlie Plummer (The Clovehitch Killer) had gotten the role, and even some joking that Woody Harrelson should wear a backwards hat and play his younger self.

But Lionsgate has officially released who's playing who, and they're continuing to release the cast on their Instagram at random times. Here's all the information we have so far.

Haymitch Abernathy- Joseph Zada

Zada has been regarded as an "unknown" actor by many Hunger Games fans, and relieved that he is. Often, fans don't want to see famous actors playing roles only for the media coverage (imagine Sabrina Carpenter as Maysilee Donner, for example).

Zada has taken roles in Invisible Boys, Total Control, and most recently, We Were Liars, an adaptation of the book by E. Lockhart.

His role as Haymitch was the first to be revealed by Lionsgate, but now, let us move on to his fellow tributes (and mentors)

Maysilee Donner- Mckenna Grace

Grace fits the description of Maysilee Donner easily- blond, sassy, and undeniably gorgeous. She's played in I, Tonya, two Ghostbusters movies, and is releasing in December, Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

She's also received prestigious awards- starring in Gifted as the child prodigy, Mary Adler, she received the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Performer.

Lenore Dove- Whitney Peak

Peak has starred in films such as Hocus Pocus 2, Molly's Game, and has been cast as Haymitch's love, Lenore Dove.

One of the best parts of her casting is her resemblance to Lucy Gray, which, according to the books, Lenore Dove is related to. Although it's not clear what relationship Lenore and Lucy have, it is clear the casting directors wanted to keep true to the Baird family.

Young Wiress - Maya Hawke

Yes, you know her from Stranger Things. She plays Robin in Stranger Things, the honest-as-a-rock accomplice of Steve Harrington. I'm especially excited to see her as Wiress because of Maya's insanely realistic acting. Wiress clearly goes through much inner turmoil seeing the tributes being eliminated- Maya can capture that struggle perfectly.

Young Mags Flanagan- Lili Taylor

Also acting in another famous YA dystopian The Maze Runner, Lili Taylor is no stranger to the cruel reality that dystopian teens face. Playing Mags, who was (spoiler alert) an ally of Katniss during the 75th Games, she's a source of comfort for Haymitch. He even quotes in SOTR, "It's okay to cry around Mags." Lili Taylor has also played roles in Mystic Pizza (1988) and The Conjuring.

Young Plutarch Heavensbee- Jesse Plemons

The late Phillip Seymour Hoffman played Plutarch in Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2- and what a phenomenal job he did. This being said, it was clear that Plutarch's role needed to be filled by someone worthy. Jesse Plemons' fame originated in his role as Landry Clarke in the NBC drama series, and Friday Night Lights, which follows a Texas high school football team.

Young Beetee Latier- Kelvin Harrison Jr.

Beetee has one of the most heartbreaking stories in SOTR, although he's not actually participating in the Games (if you know, you know). Kelvin Harrison has had his roles through Disney- a voice over in The Little Mermaid (2023), and even in Mufasa: The Lion King, voice acting as Scar. He's also won awards for the drama The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Young(er) Coriolanus Snow- Ralph Fiennes

If you're a Harry Potter fan like me, you'll notice that Ralph Fiennes actually played the role of Voldemort in all eight movies. So he already has some experience as an evil dictator. The late Donald Sutherland, who played Snow in The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2, was honored for his outstanding performance as Snow, and Fiennes was chosen to continue his legacy as Snow.

Wyatt Callow- Ben Wang

Wyatt is known for his premier odds-making- Ben Wang is known for his upcoming star role in Karate Kid: Legends, coming to the US and Canada on May 30th. He has also appeared in Mean Girls (2024) and American Born Chinese (2023).

Who's Left?

Currently, we still don't have casting announcements for Louella McCoy, Ampert Latier, Effie Trinket (a VERY anticipated role), as well as numerous others. However, the official HG social media accounts are (quite randomly) posting casting announcements, primarily on Instagram. And of course, may the odds be ever in your favor!
