In their upcoming album, “Throw The Dice”, coming out on September 4, via [PIAS] Recordings, they diverge into the topic of the uncertainty of growing older. The songs on this record are centered upon the fear of change, taking risks, and trusting yourself through the unknowns of life, encouraging listeners to embrace every possibility instead of fearing it. In an exclusive interview with The Teen Magazine, I talked with Jorina Stamm all about the album's origins, the band's creative process, and the ideas that shaped "Throw The Dice".

"The new upcoming album, "Throw The Dice" is, in many ways, a reflection on life itself. It’s about what the band learned, what they’ve observed, what has helped and what hasn’t. It questions whether they’re stepping into a new phase in life, or if that idea of clear-cut phases doesn’t really exist at all. It’s about it all being a big game, a huge gamble and you won’t know if it’s all gonna turn out fine or if it’s not, let’s throw the dice.” - Jorina Stamm

Who is Soft Loft?

For Soft Loft, music came along naturally with the strong friendship that is the foundation of all that they do. When asked how she would describe the band to someone listening for the first time, Stamm emphasized the connection between the group's members, “we’re just a bunch of friends making music”, she told me honestly.

Each person brings different influences and perspectives to the table, and those differences have become one of the band's greatest strengths. "Everyone is so different," Stamm shared. "Different music tastes, different ideas, and interests. The differences bring each of us together and make our band unique."

That variety can be heard throughout Soft Loft's music. Rather than fitting into one specific mold, the band draws from each member's individual creativity, allowing their personalities to shape the songs they create together.

Getting to know "Throw The Dice" early

Ahead of the full album, Soft Loft has already given fans a taste of what's to come with singles "F U WANT IT" and "Caught", which, both serve as perfect introductions to the world of "Throw The Dice", delving into the hardships that come with navigating life in your 20s and the grieving the different paths your life could have taken if you chose to embrace the unknown.

"Caught", the first single on the album is a look at the cost of playing it safe. The song channels the frustration of looking back on your younger self and recognizing which opportunities and chances passed by because of favoring comfort over progress. It grieves the possibilities that could have been if you didn’t stand in your own way.

"Why weren’t we braver by age of 25/ I’m not the only one who thinks we’re worth a try/but maybe so long, so long, so long."

"F U WANT IT", the second single released takes a similar retrospection of the past, looking back on a relationship and believing it didn't have to end the way it did. It touches upon the idea of "right place, wrong time": that the relationship wasn't wrong, but, the timing was off. This song poses the question, "what if we tried again now that we're older and more willing to take risks?" It's less about looking back with regret, but, looking ahead with a hope of what could be now (if you want it).

"you are gone, but you’re not/you felt wrong, but the right spot/I’d still have you again if you wanted."

Together two singles display the emotional versitality that the album touches upon: from the fear of change, to the clarity that comes when you finally decide to embrace it.

Taking a chance, “Throwing the dice”

What’s really interesting about this album’s concept, though, meticulously intertwined through the overall message, music video imagery, and, the album/single covers, it was not really something that was planned out during its creation. It evolved naturally through the process of songwriting. When asked about how the idea for the album first began to take shape, Jorina explained that the songs for the album had been written before they knew the main point of the album was going to be “throwing the dice”. Together, the band had pieced together the common themes that each song had in common, noticing that they’d been circling the same theme the whole time. Once they connected the pieces of the puzzle, it all clicked.

I wanted to know how she takes something so personal as her own life’s experiences and fears and translates them into songs.

I think it comes very naturally as all these songs are inspired by my life and people around me, so these songs pretty much are my experiences and emotions written down. It‘s nothing forced, writing about experiences and emotions is something that just happens.”

The usage of their emotions honestly, letting them naturally unfold through the record makes it stand out, making it feel authentic to the listener rather than forced around one central theme or concept.

So, what does “Throwing The Dice” mean to her?

“it‘s about it all being a gamble about all the unknown in life that we have no control over so throwing the dice to me means letting things happen and finding peace with it, (though, hoping for a lucky turnout)”

And just like how I described the album coming together as a puzzle, the album cover seems to do the same. The single covers of “F U WANT IT” and “Caught” both have unique designs on the front of them that connect to the main cover of “Throw The Dice”, revealing a carousel. On it, the members of the and stand and sit in professional, adult-looking clothing, a stark contrast to the childlike ride. It’s a small visual juxtaposition that argues that getting older doesn’t mean that you have to let go of the past, but embrace it without dwelling on it, taking in both the changes and the past as one.

The Creative Process

Making an album is a process that is heavily collaborative, and, with five other musicians in the room, there are a lot of like-minded, creative people with energies that may sometimes overlap or clash. I asked Jorina if there was anything new she learned about her bandmates, either as musicians or as people while putting this record together. Her answer was short, but it said everything: They learned how to trust one another more.

This trust shows up in how the band clicks with one another in their creative process. According to Jorina, the thing that makes the band work the best is that process of making album is fluid. There's no rigid system, which enables for more collaboration and creativity. She described the process as just, “hanging out with friends.”

“We‘re basically just hanging out working in small groups on different songs, spending time together. It's kind of like a chill evening with your friends but we‘re trying to write new songs. We're not all working on the same songs so we switch it up and use each other's creativity on different points on songs.”

When asked about the artists, albums, or entertainment that found their way into the emotional world of "Throw The Dice", Jorina pointed to Sam Fender as an artist that she and the band frequently listened to while creating this album. It is easy to notice the similarities and inspiration, the emotional vulnerability ,uncertainty of life, and rawness of being a person just figuring life out day by day in his music that resonates deeply with the themes of “Throw The Dice.”

On a more personal note, I asked Jorina what's been on repeat for her lately. She mentioned Gracie Abrams and Joni Mitchell. Her favorite Gracie Abrams song right now? "Packing It Up." It's a choice that feels fitting given the album's message of embracing change and moving forward.

Who's Most Likely To..

"Throw The Dice" is a deeply personal album created by five people who have a deep friendship that doesn't disappear when the mics turn off. To get a better sense of who these people are together, I put Jorina on the spot with a couple of "Who's most likely to" questions" about her bandmates.

Most likely to be late?: "Sarina"

Most likely to be early?: "Lukas"

Most organized?: "Simon"

Most likely to lose something on tour?: "Marius"

Most likely to take over the aux?: "Me!"

What’s next for Soft Loft?: Touring and festivals

At the time that I had interviewed Jorina, Soft Loft had just been playing at festivals, getting back to touring as the summer began at Halt Auf Verlangen, Dynamo Festival, and Treibhaus Festival. So far, Jorina told me, she has loved going back to festivals. Her favorite memory so far has been watching the crowd sing along to their new music. It's exactly the kind of moment that has her counting down to their full tour this fall.

Soft Loft will be heading all across Europe this fall for "Throw The Dice", and Jorina couldn't be more excited. One stop in particular has caught her attention: Prague. It'll be their first time playing there, making it a milestone moment for the band. More than anything, what she's looking forward to most is fans finally hearing the album in full the way it was always meant to be experienced.

Life on the road has its own rhythm for Soft Loft. Rather than a traditional tour bus, the band travels in a way they've made entirely their own, complete with a TV and a collection of gadgets. The goal, Jorina explained, is to make the space feel more like home. Their latest addition? A coffee machine. It's a small thing, but when you're living out of a vehicle with your best friends and touring the world? Coffee is definitely needed.

Be Brave, Keep Going

To close, I asked Jorina what she'd want someone to hear if they're feeling lost or unsure of what comes next in life, afraid to take that risk and 'throw the dice'. Her answer was simple and immediate: "Be brave. Keep going."

It's the same philosophy that built the band in the first place: things are better when you face them together. Only now, that circle extends to everyone who presses play.

”I hope they [listeners] find some peace in this album, I hope they think of this album as this good friend that you can turn to whenever you're in moments of uncertainty and know you‘re not alone in all of this, we‘re all struggling all the time, but we have to keep going and make the best out of it and that‘s easier together and even easier with music.”
