If you haven't watched Sabrina Carpetner's iconic music video “Taste” Ft. Jenna Ortega, I mean- what are you doing!?
The story of Taste centers on a feud between Sabrina and Jenna's characters over a boyfriend. If you want over-the-top violence, then you're at the right place! However, the chaos is laced with humor, making the video equal parts shocking and entertaining. The visual narrative doesn't shy away from bloody absurdity, from one character being impaled to a scene involving a voodoo doll.

The video is clearly influenced by Death Becomes Her, a cult classic about two women locked in a hilarious and chaotic rivalry that unexpectedly turns into an alliance. You can see this inspiration in the over-the-top drama, the exaggerated fight scenes, and, ultimately, the way Sabrina and Jenna’s characters shift from enemies to allies.
There are also clear nods to other iconic films. The creepy vibe of Psycho's famous shower scene pops up, Kill Bill’s revenge-fueled energy is echoed in Jenna’s intense eye-patch-wearing moments, and the unsettling playfulness of Child’s Play comes through in some of the eerier shots. The video blends all these elements seamlessly, creating a campy, fun, and visually striking homage to these classic stories.
The final scene features them laughing together at the boyfriend’s funeral and basically saying that no man is worth such drama when sisterhood and solidarity are way more fulfilling and fun.

The Beginning: The Best Hook Ever?
In the opening of Taste, Sabrina Carpenter's character starts with a bed full of weapons and applies her makeup using a knife as a mirror (don't bother trying it; most knives aren't that reflective). The knife mirror moments gives off this almost psychotic energy, setting the tone for the rest of the music video. The knife makes it clear that things are about to get messy in the manor (where a large chunk of the music video plays out) and this isn't a normal rivalry between a jealous ex and the new girlfriend.

After barging into her ex's house (not quietly either!) with a machete! After seeing her ex asleep with what she assumes is his new girl, she starts striking her with the weapon only to find out it was a — pillow? Swiftly after that, Jenna Ortega appears with a shotgun!
After a few missed shots, she gets a hit and Sabrina falls off the balcony. Our everyday music video right?
One thing you can't deny: Sabrina really knows how to set the stage for her awesome (albeit bloody) music videos.
Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega: The Ultimate Duo
Both Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega were Disney Channel stars before they dove into darker roles. It’s crazy to see them go from their wholesome Disney days to this twisted rivalry in Taste. Sabrina, once known for her role in Girl Meets World, and Jenna, famous for her quirky character in Stuck in the Middle, have really embraced their edgy sides now—Jenna especially with her iconic portrayal of Wednesday Addams. Fans of Jenna will probably see a little bit of Wednesday Addams in her performance here, with her cool, calculated presence taking center stage.
The best part of their duo? They take turns harming each other. Like you're causing each other bodily harm but at least you're polite enough to know whose turn it is.
Sabrina's always interrupting Jenna and her ex-boyfriend whenever they're having a moment, playing the jealous vengeful ex to a T. Jenna doesn't hesitate with her swift revenge either. One thing you might notice throughout the music video is that as soon as Sabrina interrupts either with a voodoo doll or getting in their kiss, Jenna swiftly replies. She always has a weapon ready, either a backup voodoo doll to set Sabrina on fire or a knife to push her into the pool, you know she won't back down!
The Ending: Besties Now?
Sabrina and Jenna find themselves in a showdown at the poolside. Sabrina’s already been stabbed, burned, and shot but doesn't stop. She goes one step further and interrupts their kiss.
But Jenna isn't holding back when she pulls out a chainsaw. Sabrina ends up falling into the pool, seemingly done for. But plot twist- she's not dead! In fact, it's their boyfriend who finally bites the dust, somehow switching with Sabrina.
The whole thing ends with a funeral, where Sabrina and Jenna, become the best of friends? It starts with Jenna casually fixing Sabrina's hair when they start grinning, having a moment at last. It all ends with both of them talking and laughing about shared trauma and all the guy's faults.

At least everything worked out for our favorite former Disney stars!
Who Is Taste About Anyway?
You've had to think about who Sabrina was thinking about writing this song at least once.
A lot of fans have connected the song to Sabrina's rumored relationship with Shawn Mendes. This connection was particularly pointed after Mendes was spotted with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Camila Cabello in 2023, just after rumors surfaced about him and Sabrina with some pictures of them together. Fans have even speculated that the song is indirectly about the love triangle involving Sabrina, Shawn, and Camila.
There's also other speculation about the casting in the music video. For example, many people in the past have stated the physical similarities between Jenna Ortega and Camilla Cabello.
While Sabrina hasn't confirmed these speculations, it’s clear that the song channels the messy emotions of a love triangle, with themes of rivalry, desire, and lingering attachment. In the song, she also sings:
You can have him if you like
I've been there, done that, once or twice
And singin' 'bout it don't mean I care
So whoever it's about, she clearly states she's over it.
Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega absolutely crushed it in Taste, delivering a music video that's as fiery and chaotic as it is dramatic.
