Versace and Prada have been competitors in luxury fashion for decades. Both were Italian companies, making the rivalry even more notable. However, while there was some crossover, Prada and Versace have different target audiences. Versace caters to maximalists with their bold prints while Prada is minimalistic, often featuring tailored silhouettes.
In Dec. 2018, Versace was purchased by Capri Holdings Limited (formerly Michael Kors Holdings). At first, Capri Holdings was making billions off of Versace, Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo. In spite of that, Capri Holding's purchase of Versace was expensive, causing them to acquire debt.
On top of this, according to GlobalData's managing director of analytics Neil Saunders, the company mismanaged their brands. This means that they did not do much to drive consumer interest. To reduce their debt, Capri Holdings sold Versace to the Prada Group.
John D. Idol, CEO and Chairman of Capri Holdings, stated that the sale of Versace will allow Capri Holdings to repay the majority of its debt, along with increasing financial flexibility to grow the company. They will now focus on growing Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo.
The Prada Group bought Versace in Dec. 2025 for around 1.4 billion euros. The Prada Group plans to use the fact that Versace targets a different audience to their advantage because it will diversify The Prada Group's clients. They also have a two-part plan for revitalizing Versace, said Versace Chair and Prada Group Scion Lorenzo Bertelli.
The first step of this plan involved continuing Versace's current collection while simultaneously assessing areas where Versace can improve. Some of these areas could be structure and quality. The second step is centered around making quality full price sales, which can be achieved through brand positioning, distribution and channeling.
There will also be a number of special projects. One of these long-term initiatives involves Versace's new creative director. Versace announced that their new creative director will be Pieter Mulier, who will present his first collection in 2027. In response to this, Bertelli mentioned that Mulier will relaunch Atelier Versace, the fashion house's couture line.

Why Is It Significant?
In luxury fashion, the biggest competition has always been French brands vs. Italian brands. While Italy has Prada, Gucci, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, Valentino and Fendi, France has Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and, of course, Hermes. Hermes is one of the most exclusive luxury brands of all time, with any of their pieces being an automatic status symbol, especially Birkin bags.
Versace's performance in the last few years has been suboptimal. Instead of helping the Italian luxury image, they were hurting it. The brand's underperformance can be linked to the change in styles. While during the 90s, maximalism was all the rage, clients are now opting for the "quiet luxury" aesthetic. This new aesthetic is the opposite of Versace, whose bold prints and patterns are signature to the brand's identity.
However, a change in consumer preferences can cause an underperformance, which happened in the case of Versace. This allowed for Versace to become a weak link, one which was vulnerable to being sold to a French luxury group. Since the Prada Group acquired the company and has plans to revitalize it, Versace will now help the Italian high-end fashion image.
One of the plans to revitalize Versace includes ending the production of some of Versace's sub-brands. If you want anything from Versace Jeans Couture, now is the time to get it. Prada Group CFO Andrea Bonini stated that he wants to discontinue all sub-brands from Versace, including Versace Jeans Couture. He believes that this will "clean up" the brand.
This is significant because Versace has become somewhat accessible. With outlet stores across the world and less expensive sub-brands, Versace has become accessible to a wider and more diverse audience. However, at the Prada group, this is not seen as a good thing. Discontinuing sub-brands, therefore removing many clients, will move Versace back towards a luxury status.

What Has Happened Since?
Since the purchase of Versace, the Prada Group has been working to integrate Versace into its portfolio. It has also begun to prepare for the incorporation of Versace into the group's manufacturing system.
Prada's Chief Executive Andrea Guerra wants to preserve brand DNA throughout their revitalization. The group is using Prada's worldwide reach, efficient supply chain and impressive retail network to help move the brand away from affordable luxury and towards premium luxury.
While most of the Prada Group's plans for Versace are either in the works or early stages, we can still predict a few things that we will see in the coming months and years. First, in order to redo their image, the Prada Group must decrease Versace's reliance on outlet stores. So, we can expect to see Versace outlets either closing down or having sales that are not as good as they were under Capri Holdings.
One part of Versace that is here to stay is their brand awareness. Versace has such unique and recognizable details, allowing for people around the globe to recognize Versace easily. This brand awareness will be utilized to the Prada Group's advantage as they attempt to turn the fashion house into a premium luxury brand.

Conclusion
The fashion world is always changing, whether it is through the emergence of new trends, new brands or new groups owning brands. The Prada Group's purchase of Versace has been one of the most significant developments in fashion and fashion business from the last few years. We can expect the fashion world to continue changing, as Versace's brand will be altered, hopefully for the better, by the Prada Group and new creative director Mulier.
