Passion Over Pressure: Rethinking Career Choices

Why Students Feel Pressured

When I was in school, I often heard relatives and neighbors ask children the same question: “Doctor banogi ya engineer?” (Will you be a doctor or an engineer?). For many of us, the answer wasn’t really a choice, it was expected. I’ve seen friends spend two or three years preparing for MDCAT or engineering entry tests, not because they loved those fields, but because society told them these were the only paths to success.

Success Isn’t Limited to One Profession

The truth is, success doesn’t always come from the same two trends everyone talked about. Medicine and engineering are great professions, but they are not the only options. Even within science, there are dozens of powerful fields like biotechnology, microbiology, genetics, environmental sciences, food sciences, and biomedical engineering that are creating global impact.

And for students who don’t want science at all, there are endless choices such as business, arts, media, psychology, design, computer science, finance, and so much more. Every field has value when passion and effort are behind it.

The Unfair Pressure on Girls to Become Doctors

Another concerning reality is that, in many families, daughters are pushed into becoming doctors not for their careers, but as a way to secure a “good marriage.” A medical degree is seen as a ticket to finding a wealthy or “noble” partner. This not only undervalues women’s ambitions but also reduces education to a marriage certificate.

When Hard Work Goes to Waste

What makes this even more unfair is that many of these young women, after years of hard work, never end up practicing medicine at all. A medical seat is wasted, a seat that could have gone to another passionate and deserving student. This cycle is common in our society, and it hurts not only individual students but also the future of our healthcare system.

Students Deserve to Follow Their Passion

As students, we should not waste our most productive years just to satisfy society’s expectations. Instead, we need to be brave enough to explore our passions. Choosing fields like biotechnology, microbiology, or genetics is not a compromise, it is progress. Imagine how many lives can be changed when young people are empowered to follow what they truly love.

It’s Time to Redefine Success

We must move away from pressuring every child into becoming a doctor or an engineer. True success is when a person can turn their passion into a career and contribute meaningfully to society. It is time we rethink our definition of achievement and let young people choose their own paths.

A beautiful saying of a writer: Gift Gugu Mona

“Be persistent and let no one stop you from reaching your dreams. Your journey may be filled with difficulties, but never doubt your abilities, and never underestimate the power within. The world is full of opportunities with your name on it.”
