It's not of short to say that this album was a commercial success with a whopping 81.5 million streams within the first 24 hours of release; this marked the biggest debut in her musical career and the 7th biggest debut by a female artist in Spotify history. The pop star's third album dives deep into the highs and lows of a relationship and its eventual death, using idyllic, whimsical lyrics that draw listeners into the storyline of the album.

The album is split into two opposite halves: Side A (girl so in love) marks the beginning of the album, as well as the honeymoon stage of being in a relationship, while Side B (you seem pretty sad) tracks the demise of a relationship and the realization that it's not always fun and games when the discussion is love. Without even listening to the songs, the development of the album's story is displayed through the song titles. Side A contains stupid song, honeybee, maggots for brains, u + me = <3, my way, and purple, and these song titles are far happier than the track titles of side B, which contains the cure, begged, what's wrong with me, less, expectations, and cigarette smoke.

drop dead
Drop dead is the opening track on Rodrigo's third album, and I don't think there's anything better than opening an album with the upbeat liveliness of this track. The name of the track is deceiving; when looking back at Olivia's musical history, you would expect this song to be an edgy, sad song with the pop singer's choice of words, but the track is quite the opposite. Drop Dead follows the butterflies-in-your-stomach feelings of a fresh relationship, as well as infatuation and genuine excitement that come with young love.
stupid song
Stupid song's lyrical genius is unmatched. "I want you more than any stupid song could ever say," was a line that portrayed how strong love can be, especially when you're still in your "this is a fun crush" stage. The freshness of the track is unlike anything I have heard from Olivia's music; the track's slow build to the romantic liberation provides the album's song with its most relatable and iconic lines, such as "I want you more than any stupid song can ever say". This raw, unfiltered admission that no song can ever show the intensity that love can bring is beyond powerful and relatable to many people who can't describe how much they love a person.
honeybee
If you've been on social media in the past month, you're no stranger to how influential honeybee was on romantic trends, especially on TikTok. Before even listening to the album, "baby boy, honeybee, god I love the way you look at me" was taking over my For You pages, and this says a lot about Rodrigo's musical influence. The song is so much more than that one line; Olivia depicts the paralyzing anxiety that comes with loving someone so intensely, cherishing a relationship so deeply that fear naturally creeps in when you realize that there's always a possibility you can lose the person you love the most. This sense of anticipatory grief towards the end makes this so much more than just a love song. The lyrics "I hope I never see what your face looks like goin' " are a turning point in the song because they illustrate the inevitable doubt that a seemingly "perfect" relationship may end.
maggots for brains
Inspired by Steve and Miranda from SATC, this track delves into what it means to be so dependent on your partner that your brain turns off without your lover. In a sense, your almost going insane when you're so in love sometimes, "the colors are all flat," Olivia mentions when she is away from her lover; and this is a common feeling when your in these beginning stages of being in a relationship or even just liking someone, your world lights up when your with them, and when your without them everything just seems off.
u + me= <3
U + me = <3 has a lot of dreamy, indie energy, almost in the same essence of artists like Phoebe Bridgers. It's a track that speaks to the identity formed within a relationship, it distinctly carries Olivia Rodrigo's signature. She skillfully uses the sounds to her advantage and pours immense heart into the song, creating a relatable narrative for her listeners.
my way
By far the most true to Olivia Rodrigo's musical "vibe", my way features the upbeat, pop rock kind of music that most listeners are familiar with because of Olivia Rodrigo's past albums GUTS and SOUR. This track sees Rodrigo unloading a sense of bitterness and angst that echoes the themes of a sudden rejected love.
purple
Purple winds down the first half of the album, its a perfect transition song that goes form a happy-go-lucky mood and dies down to a sudden realization that it might just end eventually. The choice of purple, instead of an overused bleu to describe this feeling is to paint the loss of hope that comes with a relationship's subtle end. This track highlights the feeling of being so consumed by a romantic connection that one loses their own identity outside of it.
the cure
the title is deceiving, because one might think love is the cure to all heartache, but Rodrigo suggests otherwise. The cure is a ballad about the realization that romantic love cannot fix heartache and insecurities. Rodrigo reflects her coming to terms with the fact that falling in love can't fix pre-existing problems in your life, and by far this is one of the most important realizations in the whole album, it almost serves as a warning to the listener that before getting into a relationship, you have to understand love isn't the cure.
begged
Begged is a nice acoustic track, exploring the emotional vulnerability and desperation of begging a partner for affection, attention, or reassurance in a relationship. The ninth track can also be interpreted as setting for the bare minimum or grappling personal insecurities and needing that constant reassurance form another party without having to ask.
what' wrong with me
What's wrong with me is a powerful, emotional duet with Robert Smith, famously known from the band The Cure. This track acknwledges that the relationship isn't healthy, and explores the self-doubt and questioning that can arise when a relationship is on the brink of ending.
less
One of the more sadder songs from Olivia's discography, less is a piano-based ballad, proving to be one of her most elegant yet depressing piece of music to date. The track tackles the ideas of drifting away from one's own wellbeing but still feeling hopeless in the foundation of a relationship, Olivia reflects that "if loving me means crying on the curb at LAX well, then i guess I wish, I wish, I wish you loved me less", displaying that love's hardship can make you doubt your connection with one another.
expectations
The quirky-ness of expectations explores the feelings of disappointment that comes when a reality of a relationship doesn't meet initial expectations, a common theme in the second half on this album. This track recalls the likes of Lana Del Rey's Normam F***ing Rockwell and its similar repose of being let down by a lover.
cigarette smoke
The final track of the album, cigarette smoke, encapsulates the whole story of the album and the remnants of a relationship that has officially ended. It represents the final stage of drifting apart for one's own good, despite a strong and lingering connection. The album concludes with an understanding that one shouldn't depend on someone to make them whole, and normalizing a sense of aloneness in ones life is healthy, and sometimes needed; especially after a life-consuming relationship.
Conclusion
You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love takes a naive and idealistic view of love, only to then discover the maturity and nuance that comes with it. Exploring that journey of discover track by track across the album gives the listeners a new view on love and its hardships. Though Olivia Rodrigo amassed a greta deal of hits, this album is not only new with musical concepts, it is arguably the most intentional, and emotionally compelling releases from the young artist. This album is one of my personal favorites from the year, it is one of the most standout albums from recent years. and I would wholeheartedly recomend to anyone and everyone to take a listen and experience this storyline and interprent each track.
