Its History and Origin

New York Fashion Week began in 1943, during World War II. Originally, it was called "Press Week." The idea came from Eleanor Lambert, who wanted to give visibility to American designers! It took place in hotels, showrooms, and even galleries.

It was not until the 1990s that New York Fashion Week began to become famous. Today, this event is one of the most anticipated and popular in the fashion industry. But what exactly is NYFW today?

Is It Just a Fashion Show?

A fashion show, yes, but not only that. NYC Fashion Week is also a platform for presenting new collections or upcoming ones to capture the attention of media, stylists, and spectators!

Also, thanks to this event, many wealthy and influential people spot what they would like to buy or order. It’s like giant advertising for all the designers! For a brand, participating in NYFW brings international recognition, legitimacy, and infinite prestige!

In fact, it’s a space where designers can test bold ideas, new materials, creative staging, and much more — and show it to the whole world!

When and How?

New York Fashion Week takes place twice a year: in February for the fall/winter collections, and in September for the spring/summer collections!

There are not only fashion shows but also performances, parties, readings, and special events.

So it lasts a week, a day starts around 9/10 in the morning and ends around 9/10 PM. So that's 10 to 12 hours of events per day!

The events take place in various iconic locations such as galleries, warehouses, hotels, or studios in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Some brands, like Ralph Lauren or Michael Kors, even hold their runway shows in their own offices.

NYFW September 2025

It took place from September 11 to 16. The guests included Oprah Winfrey, Usher, Lily Collins, Ashley Graham, and many others.

As for the venues; the Ralph Lauren show took place at their offices (Madison Avenue), and the COS Fall/Winter 2025 show was held at the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse in Brooklyn! Additionally, outfits from Tory Burch and Ralph Lauren were prominently featured!

Cultural and Media Impact

New York Fashion Week influences global trends.

The outfits worn by models inspire brands and influencers. In just a few days, the colors, cuts, or accessories spotted in New York spread across social media worldwide!

An outfit can be highlighted and go viral in just a few clicks. That’s why this show is considered the starting point of fashion!

Importance of Celebrities and Influencers

Today, NYFW would not be the same without celebrities and influencers. Their role is not limited to simply attending the show!

They share their opinions on outfits and post photos on their accounts, etc. This can highlight new designers! They play a crucial role because they allow collections to reach a much wider audience than just the people present in the room!

Even people who are not interested in fashion but follow the influencer may become interested. But what social media has also influenced is 'Body Positive'!

The Diversity of Models

For a long time, models were only very thin, often white, conforming to a standard. But in recent years, a real change has been happening and fortunately!

On the runways, models of all backgrounds, sizes, and genders are being highlighted. Brands like Christian Siriano, Tory Burch, and Prabal Gurung have showcased very diverse silhouettes, proving that fashion is possible even without being blonde, thin, and white!

This movement reflects an evolution in the mindset of designers and the public. Increasingly, fashion houses aim to reflect society as it is, not an idealized version that makes everyone feel insecure. And this openness has a strong impact on young people!

"Fashion should never be a barrier, but a celebration of all bodies."

- Becca McCharen

How does NYFW influence the way we dress, even without following fashion?

Personally, I had never really been interested in that world. But while writing about NYFW, I discovered what fashion really is! Behind every outfit, there is an idea, an emotion, sometimes even a social message.

I realized that fashion is not just about 'looking stylish'; it's also about expressing who you are!And above all, I realized that NYFW influences our daily lives, even without us noticing: the colors we see in stores a few months later often come from there!Since then, I pay more attention to what I wear. Not to follow fashion, but because when I am well-dressed, I feel more confident and better in my own skin!Ultimately, NYFW is not just for fashion enthusiasts. It's a way to show that creativity can reach everyone, even those who, like me, never thought they would be interested in it one day!

In conclusion, NYFW is very important in the fashion world. It allows designers to promote their creations or upcoming collections and give visibility to their work.
