Grace wrote “F.E.M.M.E” as a “femme lesbian anthem,” wanting to highlight the struggles queer people face. “[The song is] highlighting the all-too-common struggle of other people not taking your sexuality seriously.” Grace said. Grace also pointed out the verses as a part she was most excited for fans to hear. “I was really excited for my fans to hear the verses of the song.” Grace answered. “The chorus of the song is obviously so fun and catchy, but I think the verses really dig into the true meaning of the song.” The singer hopes that her fans feel all kinds of feelings when listening to the song - joyful, empowered, and most importantly: seen.

Behind the Scenes
When writing a new song, Grace isn’t afraid to get personal and pours her firsthand experiences into everything she makes: “[..] everything I create, whether I do it intentionally or not, is colored by my own lived experiences. I think that’s why listeners gravitate towards certain artists and not others. It’s a ‘do I relate to the way you see the world?’ type thing.” When we asked Grace about her creative process, she described herself as “a big melody girl.” “I love to start with a chord progression and produce some kind of melody and from there, let the song tell me what it wants to be about.
Like, does it sound angry? Playful? Flirty? Heartbroken? And so on.”
Since beginning her music career, Grace’s creative processes have evolved. “I have a strong idea and vision of who I am now.” Grace mentioned. “I never want to put myself into a box when writing, but I think I’ve really found my voice as a writer. I’m not trying to be anything else!”
Influences and Inspirations
Sapphic icons such as Renée Rapp and Chappell Roan are influences on Grace’s music. “Both of those artists have a theatricality to their music which I appreciate and resonate with. With Renee, I just love her relationship with her fans and the public and how she manages to maintain her personality and humor in the public eye.” Additionally, Grace has also named pop superstar Taylor Swift, who also got her start in Nashville, as a major influence growing up. Grace also shows her admiration for Queen lead vocalist Freddie Mercury: “I would die to meet Freddie Mercury. [He’s a] queer vocalist legend!” she mentioned. “I had a major Queen hyper fixation when I was in middle school.”
Advice to Aspiring Musicians
As a piece of advice for aspiring musicians, Grace says to “[Just] start releasing music, start posting on social media, start playing shows. It doesn't have to be perfect. You’re always going to look back on your old work and cringe a little bit, so might as well just start now.”

A Soundtrack in the Making
A great movie often goes together with a great soundtrack, and Molly Grace would be a perfect candidate for the job. The cover for “F.E.M.M.E” is even inspired by 1999’s But I’m a Cheerleader, starring Natasha Lyonne, which Grace describes as “campy, hilarious, [and] relatable.”
Future Plans for Molly Grace
You’ll soon be able to catch Grace live on her “But I’m a Popstar” tour, and she’s just as excited as you are.
“It’s so surreal every time to see [the fans],” she said. “[It’s] like, here’s a room of two hundred people who put my concert in their calendar, planned their day around me, dressed up just for this show. It’s crazy to me. And I love getting to thank them in person.”
