When people debate the greatest NBA players of all time, it’s certain that Lebron lands in the Top 5, sometimes top 2. Since getting drafted in 2003 before most NBA fans were even born, he has won 4 championships, NBA All Time scorer and many more accolades.
Longevity Defines Him.
Even Michael Jordan, 6x NBA champion and 14x All Star most common athlete brought up in these controversial rankings, showed decline in his late 30’s during his Washington Wizards stint after a 3 year retirement. During the 2001–02 Season he averaged 22.9 PPG, 5.7 RPG, and 5.2 APG on 41.6% FG, all below his career standards. In the 2002–03 Season it wasn’t much of the same. At age 39–40 Jordan averaged 20 PPG, 6.1 RPG, and 3.8 APG on 44.5% FG ( all 82 games in 1 year) but with reduced career efficiency and on a non-playoff team.
Yesterday, on December 30th 2025- his 41st birthday- LeBron James and the Lakers faced off against the star studded Detroit Pistons. James managed to put up 17 PTS, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in a loss that signaled the Lakers defense is inconsistent and needs changes.
So far this season LeBron is averaging 20.0 Points per Game, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists on 49.6% shooting. These are extremely impressive for someone who missed the first 14 games this 2025–26 NBA Season with a sciatic nerve irritation. Historically, no player EVER has averaged 20+ points per game. The closest to James was former Laker Alumni Kareem- Abdul- Jabbar with 10.1- 10.4 Points a Game in his final year (1988–1989).
But, let’s move away from the stats momentarily and talk about his star studded resume. LeBron has been to the NBA Finals 10 times achieving 4 championships. 2 with the Miami Heat (2012,2013), 1 with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers (2016), and the other with the Lakers in 2020. Pretty stacked?

None shines better than the 2016 Matchup with League high 31.02 million viewers. The Cavaliers faced off against the 73–9 Golden State Warriors. The Cavs found themselves down with a 3–1 series deficit, no team in league history has ever achieved a championship with this deficit.
But, the Cavaliers did the impossible. With James averaging 29.7 PPG, 11.3 Rebounds, 8.9 Assists, 2.6 Steals, and 2.3 Blocks Per Game and his ally Kyrie Irving averaging 27.1 Points, 3.9 Rebounds, and 3.9 Assists, the Cavaliers won this series in 7 ending a 52 year championship drought. With LeBron’s chasedown block on Iguodala to Kyrie’s Game 7 dagger; “Bang, Bang.” This conveys the legacy, brilliance, and leadership Lebron and the Cavaliers accomplished under immense pressure.
So, what keeps him effective at 41? Basketball IQ, significant amount of care mentally and physically, his star-studded resume, and the inspiration from greats of the past.
Most critics point to Jordan’s perfect finals record, but it’s the longevity that no one has sustained this deep in their careers.
As of now, Father Time remains undefeated, so enjoy greatness while it’s still here. Happy 41st Birthday to Lebron James- defying the odds.
