A New Fresh Start

The beginning of the school year is an exciting chance to reinvent yourself. It’s almost like new years, where you are setting goals for yourself, like to not procrastinate and get good grades. It’s a clean slate and a time to leave behind old habits and step into a better version of yourself.

For example, last year I was always procrastinating until the last minute. I'd tell myself I'd start assignments early, but somehow I always ended up working on them the night before they were due: sometimes even the morning of. However, this year I told myself I would seriously put an end to procrastinating.

And so far, I have been. Ive been getting assignments done days before they are due and because of this, have seen my grades go up. I feel like a completely different student than last year.

A Schedule

Don’t get me wrong I love summer, but sometimes it can feel a little chaotic without a set schedule. At first, I was so excited to sleep in and do whatever I want with my days. But suddenly, I was forgetting which day of the week it was and felt like I wasn’t being productive.

School offers a set schedule, which allows you to develop a healthy routine. It lets you make the most out of your day. You know when things start and end, and it allows you not to bed-rot the whole day.

During the summer, I’d wake up at 11 a.m., scroll on my phone for hours, and suddenly it would be 4 p.m and I hadn’t done anything. I remember one Tuesday when I thought it was Sunday, and I ended up missing a lunch I had planned with a friend . That’s when I realized how much structure school actually gives me. Having a routine helps me feel grounded and keeps me from wasting entire days.

Extracurriculars

One of the best parts of going back to school is diving back into extracurricular activities (or joining new ones). Whether it’s a sports team, the school play, student government, or a club, there’s something exciting about being involved in something beyond the classroom. Last year, I joined my school’s Speech and Debate team, and it completely changed my school experience. It gave me something to look forward to after class and helped me make new friends. So if you’re feeling nervous about school starting, think about what extracurricular you could try this year to make your school experience more enjoyable

Fall Season Coming up

As much as I love summer, I am so ready for the autumn season. I have been craving a crisp pumpkin spice latte and wearing cute fall outfits. Just picture it: apple-picking, halloween, fresh breeze.

You can’t tell me there isn’t something magical in the air during fall. I remember walking to school one chilly October morning with a hot drink in my hand and the trees glowing orange and red. It felt like something out of a movie. That’s why those first few months of school don’t seem so bad when you’re surrounded by all the comforting vibes of fall.

Learning New Things

Okay…hear me out. I know this sounds kind of nerdy, but just think about it: every class is a chance to learn something new and expand your knowledge. Whether that be reading a book in english class that completely changes your viewpoint of the world, or doing a crazy experiment in chemistry class. School isn’t as boring as lots of kids make it out to be.

For example, when we were learning about the Bandung Conference in my sophomore year World History class, our teacher had us role play the conference for our final assessment. Each of us represented a different country and we debated decisions just like the real delegates. It was so much fun and I will never forget that moment. Overall, each school day gives you the chance to expand your horizon of knowledge and discover new passions.

Teacher Connections

I’m also looking forward to connecting with my teacher this school year. Having a good relationship with your teachers can make such a big difference in your school experience. When you feel comfortable asking questions or getting help, everything feels less overwhelming.

Also, teachers are super inspiring once you get to know them. They're not just there to grade you, but they also really want to see you grow. I’m excited to have that kind of support this year and maybe even find a mentor or two along the way.

Friends

One of the biggest reasons I’m excited to go back to school is seeing my friends again. After a long summer where everyone has been on trips or just doing their own thing, it feels good to reconnect. There is something so special about the first day of school when you are rushing to hug your friends and debrief your summer.

Overall, your friends are the ones who make boring classes more bearable and early mornings a little more worth it. And it’s not just about the people you already know: each new school year is a chance to form new friendships.

Reality Check

We complain about school a lot( the homework, the alarms, the tests), but if you think about it, it’s really not that bad compared to the pressures of adult life. School is a much calmer time. Adults always say, “Enjoy it while it lasts,” and I never really got that until I thought about it deeper. Right now, our biggest stress might be studying for a math test or finishing an essay.

That feels huge in the moment, but it’s nothing compared to the kind of responsibilities we’ll juggle later on. We don’t fully realize how good we have it until it’s gone. Think about it: when else in life are you going to spend your days surrounded by hundreds of people your own age? When else will you be able to walk into a cafeteria and have your friends sitting at the same table every day?

So yeah, going back to school might not sound thrilling to everyone, but it has so much to offer and there’s a lot to look forward to. I hope this article made you feel more excited about going back to school and I wish you all the best school year!
