I Let Spotify’s AI DJ Run My Life for a Week— Here Are My Honest Thoughts

Music & Podcasts

July 19, 2025

I can't believe it's already been two years since Spotify first announced its premium AI DJ feature on February 23, 2023. I recently got premium access on Spotify so I was curious to try this feature out! A personal music DJ powered by artificial intelligence that not only plays you songs but talks to you like a real radio host?

Sounds slightly odd, but honestly pretty amazing. So how I decided to give this feature a real test was by letting Spotify's AI DJ control all my music for a week. From morning to night, workouts to wind-downs, I let it control all my music. What I learned was not only surprising but entertaining.

Day 1: The Excitement Starts

The first day was all about exploration. I opened my Spotify app and hit the AI DJ button immediately. A soft voice starting speaking and told me its name was "DJ X", my personal DJ.

He greeted me along with my name, pointed ot a few of my favorite artists from my past listening habits, and transitioned into a mix of Rihanna, Billie Eilish, and The Weeknd. Not bad.

At first, the voice caught me off guard. The AI DJ's voice didn't sound robotic and instead too human. As I was listening, DJ X would comment in between songs--things like, "You played this on repeat in 2023" or "Here's something a little different for your Friday vibe". This revealed to me that Spotify clearly has a good grasp on my listening habits and this felt very personal in a way no other algorithm has felt.

Day 2: Starting My Morning and Afternoon

By day two, I started to enjoy someone else take control of my music. While I was eating breakfast, DJ X played a chilled-out morning playlist, blending in music styles like lo-fi and mellow pop. It was a bunch of songs I would've put together myself in a playlist, but the easiness of not having to do anything felt good.

L ater in the day, while I was studying, DJ X changed the mood, playing instrumental tracks and pop rock. At some point, there was this nostalgia wave that this track created when it played: "Something Just Like This" by The Chainsmokers. I didn't even realize how much I needed to hear this song, but I'm glad I did.

Day 3: Realizing Repetition

Midway throughout the week, I started to notice that there was a lot of repetition. Don't get me wrong--the DJ tries to keep things fresh. But it definitely has a tendency of looping back to your favorite artists and tracks, which makes sense from an algorithm standpoint. But if I'm letting this DJ fully run my music, I want a bit more spontaneity.

For example, I love The Weeknd--but by the third day, I'd heard "Die for You" and "Timeless" at least four times. I love these songs but I crave a wider range, with some new songs that aren't on my regular rotation.

Day 4: Emotional Assistance

By day 4, I was feeling a little under the weather and pretty stressed. Without me doing anything, DJ X knew the vibe I was trying to go for and shifted into slower, softer tracks with more instrumental tones. No high-energy stuff, just mellow, kinda sad songs.

Was this is a coincidence? Could be. Or maybe Spotify picked up on how I was skipping upbeat tracks earlier or noticed something else along those lines. Either way, this felt oddly comforting to me.

Day 5: Testing a Party Setting

I had some friends over Friday night. I usually spend so much time trying to figure out the best songs to add to our playlist, and how to come up with a good combination of genres. Then I started to think, "why not let DJ X plan out our playlist?" and that is exactly what I did.

At first, it was killing it! Starting with nostalgic early 2010s hits we all grew up on, along with some current pop and hip-pop. We were all vibing, dancing, and having an amazing time.

But then, the DJ took a random turn. Out of nowhere, it started playing these slow, soft alt-rock songs that completely killed the vibe. You could literally tell that the energy we had seconds prior, slipped out of the room.

That's when I realized: AI DJs are never going to be able to read the room. They'll definitely be able to keep the vibe when you are in your living room by yourself. But in the party context?

Definitely not! Nothing can replace someone who actually feels the vibe in real time.

So, I learned that DJ X is good for solo listening. But for group settings, it's still a DIY thing.

Day 6: New Music Unlocked

By Saturday, I decided to let DJ X completely do its thing, no skipping allowed. This was one of the best decisions I made all week.

DJ X exposed me to new rap, pop, rock, R&B, EDM, indie, and alternative music. This AI made me listen to new releases, different songs from artists I already like, and totally random genres.

If there's one thing this AI DJ is really good at, it's genre transitions. It blended songs I already loved with new random ones in a way that felt so smooth.

Day 7: The Final Decision

By Sunday, I wasn't even questioning it anymore. This AI DJ had become part of my routine by playing me my workout playlists, chill background music, and just whatever mood I was in. Did it always pick the perfect song?

No. But honestly, it made life easier, and usually it hit the perfect mood.

Letting DJ X control your music isn't just about music. It's kind of like handing over a piece of your mindset to a robot that knows you surprisingly well. It's convenient, sometimes even weirdly comforting. But it also shows, that technology still can't fully replace that human touch.

If you're really picky about every single song, this AI DJ might not be for you. But if you're down to experiment with this DJ and just vibe, it's honestly pretty fun.

Overall Rating

I would rate this DJ a solid 8/10. Spotify's AI DJ is an actually solid, addictive music tool. However, it has flaws.

It repeats itself. It doesn't always nail the group setting. But it also surprises you, comforts you, and makes daily listening much more efficient.

Would I use it again? Without a doubt. But I would also make sure to stick to a few personal playlists sitting around, because sometimes only you know what it is you need to listen to.
