Every time I open social media it’s guaranteed I will see Heated Rivalry related content. Okay, maybe I’m just too deep into the obsession. But now, more than 4 months after the premier of the first episode, no one can convince me they haven’t heard about it yet.

While it was criticised as too sexual at first, more and more people seem to realise the emotional depth of the show. Not to mention the incredible fame lead actors Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie reached because of Heated Rivalry.

Now you might wonder, how did this TV show, with a budget of less than $10 million USD, become so popular? And why is it so important for the LGBTQ+ community?

A Short Summary

Heated Rivalry portrays the story of the professional hockey players Canada’s Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Russia’s Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie). Because of their immense talent, they’re pitted against each other from the start. But who would have thought that their so called “rivalry” never quite existed as everyone believes?

Even before their first season in North Americas best hockey league, they hook up. Knowing that their secret could never be shared with the public, hidden meetings whenever they’re in the same city become an important part of their life. First, both men claim their relationship is purely based on physical attraction.

But the longer they know each other, they can’t hide their clear affection and the emotional depth of their connection. In the end, they win their battles against internalised homophobia and abusive parents, spending two entire weeks during the summer together.

Hey, we're good here. Your family is here, your boyfriend is here. You're good here.

How they navigate their life as a long-distance couple no one is allowed to know about is shown in the sequel The Long Game. It’s the 6th book in Rachel Reid’s Game Changers universe, soon to be followed by Unrivaled, the third book about Shane and Ilya. The second season of the show is supposed to be released in April 2027.

Why Is It So Popular?

Heated Rivalry shows a relationship where both Ilya and Shane are completely equal. While heterosexual relationships in movies are often defined by gender roles, those obviously don’t exist for two men. Instead, they both struggle with the toxic masculinity that is represented in professional hockey.

Since their first meeting, it’s obvious that they could never share their relationship publicly. They would risk being thrown out of the league, which would lead to Ilya being deported back to Russia. There, he would face legal charges due to “promoting queerness”. A lot of queer people can relate to their fear of being outed and the consequences that would follow.

It’s addictive to see the couple’s chemistry and find out how their story will evolve. Because of their various struggles, Shane and Ilya continue to push each other away. Once they finally talk, they realise how hopeless the situation seems to be, as there had never been an openly queer player before.

The whole show is an emotional rollercoaster and the actors did an amazing job to portray the complexity of it all. Whenever I rewatch it, I notice another small detail that I missed before, which makes it even better.

The Importance To The Queer Community

The overnight success of Heated Rivalry led to a totally new focus on the LGBTQ+ community. Thousands of closeted athletes reached out to the actors or shared their stories online. It brings hope to every member of the LGBTQ+ community and especially to young athletes, who don’t see a place for themselves in their sport.

Fans have been sending me messages [...] telling me how much it meant to them for me to come out. [...] When you have a secret that you work as hard as I did to protect, it's exhausting. [...] It's really lonely.

Even today, it’s not the norm to see a queer couple in TV shows and don’t even get me started on queer main characters. Heated Rivalry presents the typical popular jocks as queer, instead of shy outsiders. It’s another display of what queer love can look like.

Another piece of representation for queer teenagers. Another step towards a better and more inclusive future.

Multiple hockey teams used the opportunity to sell their own Heated Rivalry merch. Both the Ottawa Senators and the Eisbären Berlin included jerseys showing Hollander and Rozanov on the back in their merch collection. Some people claimed they would only do it for money and their image, but both teams explained that they would donate money to local pride organisations.

In the end, a single TV show won't change the world. A single coming out won't save every queer person. But each time, it's a step into the right direction.

Towards a brighter future. And that's exactly why I love to watch every queer show and movie. It encourages visibility for people, who don't have the ability to stand up for themselves. I like to believe, that at some point, every single person who thinks there is something wrong with them will see a movie or read a book or hear about the coming out of someone else. And they will be able to accept themselves eventually. Because no one should feel like they're less, just because of their sexuality.
