1. What Is Skydance?

Skydance is a production company run by David Ellison, the son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison. They’ve worked on major movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Mission: Impossible, and The Tomorrow War.

Skydance is a key player in action, sci-fi, and animation, and is known for its tech-forward approach and franchise filmmaking.

Are you Crazy Devi, robotics queen Fabiola Torres, or maybe popular jock Paxton?

2. What’s Paramount Got to Do With It?

Paramount is Hollywood royalty. They are behind some of our favorite movies— we're talking Mean Girls, Transformers, SpongeBob, and MTV. But behind the scenes, the studio has been struggling.

Its stock price has dropped significantly over the past few years. Its streaming platform, Paramount+, has lagged behind Netflix and Disney+, and cable losses have deeply impacted its profits.

As Reuters noted, Paramount, like other film companies, has "been struggling to recover from last year's monthslong strikes by Hollywood writers and actors, a soft advertising market, and falling cable subscriptions in the United States that has eroded profit for its TV business."

According to Justin Klawans for The Week, Paramount's decline can also be traced back to its 2019 merger between CBS and Viacom, which created the current company, Paramount Global.

3. It’s Been a Long Time Coming

This isn’t the first time Skydance and Paramount have flirted with a deal.

Earlier merger talks collapsed in June 2024, when National Amusements, the parent company of Paramount, walked away at the last minute during the final stages of negotiations. As Justin Klawans for The Week reported, the fallout left Paramount in limbo and reignited uncertainty about its future.

4. So... They’re Merging For Real Now?

Yup. Skydance and Paramount are officially merging, meaning David Ellison and his team are taking over creative and financial control.

As Wikipedia reports, "On July 7, 2024, Skydance Media and Paramount Global announced a definitive agreement to merge in a deal valued at $8 billion, forming a new entity known as "Paramount Skydance Corporation"."

"The agreement values the newly formed entity at approximately $28 billion."

The transaction closed on July 24, 2025.

David Ellison will become the CEO of the merged entity, with former NBC Universal CEO Jeff Shell serving as President.

5. Wait, Why Should Teens Care?

Skydance is known for its investment in AI tools, cloud production, and data-driven storytelling. The merger could mean:

  • Smarter, tech-powered content
  • Revamped franchises made for a digital-first audience
  • A new wave of opportunities for digital creators and diverse talent

If you're a filmmaker, editor, or just obsessed with stories, this move is likely to affect what you watch and who gets to create it.

6. The New Hollywood Era

For digital-savvy teens who are next up to shape the world, this means the world literally could be your oyster.

AP News reported that "Ellison stressed the need to transition into a “tech hybrid” to stay competitive in today’s entertainment landscape."

7. What’s the Drama?

The process was anything but smooth, however. Regulatory concerns, shareholder disputes, and political controversy almost derailed the merger entirely.

To name some, Skydance pledged to eliminate Paramount’s DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) programs to satisfy the Trump-appointed FCC chairman Brendan Carr, which stirred political backlash. Furthermore, Paramount paid $16 million to settle a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump related to a controversial 60 Minutes interview, which regulators viewed as linked to the merger approval process. Skydance also agreed to install a CBS News ombudsman for at least two years to review editorial bias concerns.

According to The Washington Post, the deal saw a 2‑1 FCC vote in favor.

Biden-appointed Commissioner Anna M. Gomez dissented, warning of countervailing threats to press freedom and journalistic independence. The Washington Post reports that she was quoted, “After months of cowardly capitulation to this administration, Paramount finally got what it wanted. Unfortunately, it is the American public who will ultimately pay the price for its actions.”

Final Thoughts

This Skydance–Paramount merger signals a preview of where movies, streaming, and digital creativity are headed. Whether you're a future filmmaker, a binge-watcher, or someone building your personal brand online, the way stories are told (and who gets to tell them) is evolving.

Bottom line, Hollywood is changing.
