BookTok and romcom fans, get excited: The Love Hypothesis is coming to the big screen!

To convince her best friend that she’s happily moved on from her ex, Olive, a third-year PhD candidate at Stanford, impulsively kisses the first man she sees... who turns out to be Dr. Adam Carlsen, a young, smart, and notoriously grumpy professor with a reputation for dismantling grad students’ hopes and dreams.

Surprisingly, Adam agrees to keep up the charade, and the two strike a mutually beneficial fake-dating deal.

But as their staged relationship leads to something more, Olive begins to realize that scientific logic might not account for messy human emotions. And as it turns out, Adam might not be as cold as his reputation suggests.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the film adaptation, and here is everything we know so far:

1. Adaptation Format & Status

A feature film adaptation is in development, produced by Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with MRC and Bisous Pictures.

The project is officially in the development/production phase. Filming began July 14 in Montreal. However there is no confirmed release date but expected to premiere on Prime Video, possibly in 2026.

2. Lead Cast & Characters

Lili Reinhart (known from Riverdale) is cast as Olive Smith.

Tom Bateman (from Murder on the Orient Express) plays Dr. Adam Carlsen.

3. Star Wars Connection

Interestingly, the story originated as a piece of Star Wars “Reylo” fan fiction, originally titled Head Over Feet, based on Kylo Ren and Rey. The characters were later renamed Olive and Adam, and the setting reimagined into a standalone contemporary romance.

Notably, in real life, Tom Bateman is married to Daisy Ridley, who played Star Wars character Rey.

4. Lili Reinhart's Transformation & Role

Reinhart has debuted a new brunette hairstyle to reflect her character Olive, complete with a lab coat look in shared behind-the-scenes images. She’s also attached as executive producer under her banner Small Victory.

5. What We Don’t Yet Know

We are still waiting on the exact release window and distribution details, though expectations lean toward Prime Video in late 2025 or 2026. Full supporting cast (beyond the two leads) and plot deviations—if any—haven’t been announced.
