Every Night I Drink Tea and Here Are My Ultimate Recommendations

Food

Tue, March 10

My favourite part of the evening is sitting down after eating dinner. All the dishes are clean and put away, sweet treats have been had, it's nearing bedtime, and it's time to make a tea before heading to sleep. Every night, just before I head to bed, I will brew a cup of tea. Not an English Breakfast Tea, which is normally associated with "having a cup of tea," but a warm herbal tea.

If you want to feel relaxed and end your day with some calm, while also taking care of your health, herbal teas might be the thing for you. I have compiled a list of my favourite herbal teas to recommend if you're wondering which to have tonight.

The teas will be listed from my least favourite to my favourite, but I did love them all! I have then recommended the teas out of 10, with 10 being the herbal tea that will change your life. So, keep reading if you want to find your tea match!

5. Valerian Tea:

Let's start with my least favourite "sleepy tea," and end with my favourite.

So, to begin, we have Valerian tea and Valerian Root tea. This herbal beverage is unusual, which is why it's last on my list. I did like the earthy, woody taste, but this tea was just too bitter for me.

I felt quite sleepy after drinking this tea, and I can say it did improve my sleep. I felt relaxed and actually drowsy when I went to bed, rather than still awake, sitting on my phone until I fell asleep. I was out like a light straight away.

With its stronger herb and musky scents, I'd only recommend this tea if you prefer bitter to sweet. It is great if you're struggling to sleep, but if you're new to herbal teas and want something that actually tastes nice, this one might not be for you—4/10 from me.

4. Passionflower Tea:

Up next, we have Passionflower tea, and I am quite fond of this tea. After a few cups over a few nights, I noticed a significant difference in my body and felt very calm and light before heading to bed. The tea itself is easy and gentle to digest, as I found it light. However, the flavours of this tea are a little bland; there are soft, green-leafy notes as well as hints of herbs and grassy tones.

If you like softer teas with quieter flavours, I would recommend this tea. From me, Passionflower tea gets a 6/10.

3. Lavender Tea:

Sitting in the middle of the list is Lavender tea. This tea has not only enchanting aromas of lavender (while brewing, the smell made me feel like I was in a field during spring) but also a floral taste. When drinking, while I was wrapped up cosy on the sofa, sweet notes of honey were trickling down my throat, and I actually felt my shoulders drop from my ears.

I noticed this tea made any anxieties I had during the day ease away. I noticed that I was not as stressed or overthinking the day after drinking this tea before bedtime.

If you love the smell of flowers and want a gentle, soft drink to have before bed that isn't too strong in taste, it will keep you awake and prevent you from struggling with overthinking before heading to bed. This tea is the one for you. I will give Lavender tea a 7/10.

2. Peppermint Tea:

It was a tough choice to decide who got 2nd and 1st place on this list, but I decided Peppermint tea lands as the penultimate winner here. I am a lover of peppermint tea, and one of the best things about this tea is that you can have it before going to bed and in the morning when you wake up. I found this tea was light on my stomach and de-bloated me after dinner and in the mornings.

I felt soothed, cooled, and fresh - the perfect combination for the evening and the morning. I am fond of the peppermint taste, and I know what you're thinking: 'Does it taste like toothpaste?' And no! It doesn't at all, it actually tastes a bit like a candy cane...

If you're looking for a tea that isn't too bold but also not too bland and want to feel better inside and out within a few days, then this is the brew for you! I give this one an 8/10.

1. Camomile Tea:

Last, but certainly not least, is by far my favourite late-night cuppa before heading to bed, and that is camomile tea. A universally popular nighttime beverage, which is the perfect combination of all the teas mentioned today (so maybe I'm 'basic').

I have been drinking this tea for about a year now, so perhaps I am biased in my opinion on how much I rave about this tea, but over the past year, I have noticed an improvement in my overall health - my skin, my sleep quality, and my stress and anxiety have been significantly better than before I began drinking this. Camomile is known to be naturally calming, with a soft, mild flavour and a subtle apple note that helps relax the body and mind, preparing you for sleep.

If you want to feel like a lady straight out of the Bridgerton cast, Camomile tea will be the one for you - even the name sounds pretty! I have to give this a 10/10.

However, do note that to see a significant difference in drinking tea, you need to give it time. So now this is the part where it's up to you to try some of the teas mentioned and see for yourself which one tickles your taste buds and has you sinking into those pillows and drifting into sleep. Will you be a Camomile lover like me, or discover your own niche of tea?
