Deinfluencing: Why You Shouldn't Believe Everything You See

Aesthetics & Trends

November 07, 2025

Most of us have been there, scrolling through our feeds and suddenly feeling like everyone around has the "perfect" life. Maybe it's the best makeup routine, the cutest clothes, the best workout routine... whatever it is, the influencers are making it look so easy and flawless that it's no wonder you may feel inclined to buy the same products they're promoting to make your life better. Recently, however, a growing trend known as deinfluencing is changing how people view social media and consumerism.

What Is Deinfluencing?

Deinfluencing refers to people persuading others not to buy certain products or to consider the pros and cons of current trends before jumping into purchasing anything. Unlike traditional influencers who are trying to convince their followers to buy something, deinfluencers tell their followers about the products that aren't worth the price and/or those that simply did not deliver as promised. Ultimately, the mission of deinfluencing is to promote honesty and help consumers become more aware and mindful in the purchases they make.

Deinfluencing became so popular due to the large number of consumers who were fed up with the constant push to buy things they don't need. Many influencers promote products simply because they've been compensated for doing so, not necessarily because they genuinely support or believe in the product. Deinfluencing serves as a reminder to evaluate what we see online and to understand that social media does not accurately depict reality.

How We Get Caught Up in Influencer Marketing

I'll be honest, I've fallen for influencer marketing more times than I’d like to admit. About three months ago, I saw a skincare product that was everywhere on TikTok. All of these influencers swore that this product would instantly leave their skin looking radiant and healthy.

So, I purchased the product and used it daily for weeks, but I got absolutely no results. Not only did I waste money on a product that failed to meet its claims, but I also began to realize how easily I'd bought into the hype surrounding this product based solely on how great it looked on my screen.

After this disappointment, I became more cautious and recognized the level of editing and advertising that goes into each post an influencer creates. Every single "easy" lifestyle that is promoted behind the scenes includes filters and sponsorships.

The Benefits of Deinfluencing

Deinfluencing can be really beneficial for consumers like us. For example, it can reduce the amount of pressure we place on ourselves to continue buying new products and keeping up with every current trend. Additionally, when influencers provide honest reviews of products, it builds credibility within the community. Lastly, deinfluencing promotes sustainability by encouraging consumers to shop less and to consider the environmental implications of overconsumption.

For example, deinfluencers often speak about using items you currently have and shopping at smaller, more ethical companies. If an individual develops a more thoughtful and authentic approach to expressing themselves and if they begin to develop healthier spending habits, then deinfluencing can be a positive force. It encourages consumers to move away from asking, "What should I buy to fit in?" and asks instead, "What am I truly interested in?"

The Negative Effects of Deinfluencing

Deinfluencing is not a perfect practice. Some individuals are simply using deinfluencing as another means of influencing, like saying, "don't buy this, buy that.ā€ Therefore, deinfluencing loses its intended purpose. Others may take the concept too far by judging others for enjoying trendy products.

Deinfluencing is about awareness, not judgment. Each person is unique and will have different wants and needs, therefore, what doesn't work for one person may be perfect for another.

With so many opposing views available online, it is challenging to discern who to trust. Some individuals may even begin to doubt themselves and feel guilty for desiring products that bring them joy. Ultimately, the goal of deinfluencing should be to achieve a balance between enjoying social media and making decisions about what we consume.

Being Your Own Person

Ultimately, the most important lesson I've learned from deinfluencing is to slow down before making a decision. Now, whenever I see a product online, I first ask myself a few questions: Do I really need this product? Will this product actually improve my life? Or, am I purchasing this item simply because everyone else has it?

While social media can be entertaining and inspiring, it should never make us feel inferior. Deinfluencing is a reminder that we can determine what to believe and what to ignore. By choosing to be more authentic and focusing on what we truly value versus what's trending, we can build a healthier relationship with social media, one that is more grounded in reality and less influenced by pressure.

In the end, it's not what we own or how we appear on social media that matters, but rather how we perceive ourselves once the screen shuts off.
