Make A List

Making lists is so important if you want to see results and keep yourself on track. You need to pinpoint exactly what you need to do and when you need to be done with it.

On your list, you have to make sure to put what you need to do and when you need to do it. Having this deadline written down might prevent you from procrastinating. If an assignment is done in a week, write that it is due two days before that week is over.

This way, you will have the assignment finalized and done before it is actually due. This will help you big time. It can be helpful to get a planner. The planner will help you organize your life and everything you need to get done.

Dress to Impress

How you dress is important. I’m not saying to go out and buy designer clothes or anything fancy like that. I want you to focus on picking out an outfit that says “school.” Wear clothes that will help you focus and make you feel confident. When you dress confidently, you tend to act more confident as well.

Set Your Alarm Early

You need to set your own alarm. If you are reading this, you are old enough to set your alarm for school and get up to it. Not 30 minutes before you have to leave, not 15 minutes – about an hour before you have to leave, maybe even an hour and a half. You should have enough time to do everything you need to do without rushing: eat, shower if you choose to, get dressed, make your bed, and whatever else you have to do in the morning. W

hen you feel like you have enough time to do things, you feel less rushed. This extra time is also good for those mornings when you realize that you forgot to do your homework. Now you have time to do so without rushing on the bus or before class starts. Start your morning early.

Go to Bed at a Reasonable Time

In order to get up early, you need to be able to get up. I usually have a lot of homework, and I’m assuming a lot of us high schoolers do. The key is to prioritize your time when you get home. Personally, I get home from school and eat a snack so I’m not hungry while I am doing my school work.

Then. I make a list in my planner of everything I need to do for each class or club that I am a part of. I typically tackle the hardest stuff first.

I spend most of my nights on the hardest homework or the most time-consuming. Then, after I finish that, I can just breeze through everything else because it is significantly easier than my chemistry or physics homework. I usually end up in bed on my busiest nights at around 9:30–10 p.m. This obviously changes with clubs and sports, but you get the idea. Don’t spend an hour scrolling on Instagram when you know you have to study for your math test tomorrow.

Eat Healthy and Drink Water

When you are in school or running from place to place, you don’t always want to eat healthy or drink water. Sometimes you don’t have time to do either of those things. You need fuel and water in order for you to do well in school.

So I need you to take time to make time for eating and drinking water. Bring healthy snacks and have treats every once in a while. Your body will thank you, and so will your brain. You can’t run on empty; you will crash at some point.

Get Moving

This is a tough one for all of you who don't play sports. Chances are your course load is full, so you may argue that you have no time for that. But you do.

It doesn't have to be an insane workout. Just 10 or maybe 15 minutes. Go for a brisk walk or do a YouTube video workout. When you are active, even for this short span of time. You will feel less stressed, and your body will feel rejuvenated and ready for your homework. Write it down. Make it a priority in your life. It may change your life.

Ask your Teachers for Help

Your teachers are there to teach. They are there to help you learn. They know you don’t know everything; if you did, they wouldn’t be teaching.

Your teachers aren’t going to judge you for asking for extra help. Learning this skill now will help you in the future, whether you decide to go to college, trade school, the military, or the workforce.

We all need to learn how to ask for help without feeling embarrassed. If you don’t want to raise your hand and ask, Send them an email or ask them before or after class, or before and after school. Whichever works for you. But make sure you ask.

This is Your Year

Don't be discouraged; this year is going to be a good one. Just do your best and keep yourself healthy while you go through your year. I know it's hard because you get busy and overloaded with homework, chores, friends, college, whatever it is.

I get it – but it is possible to overcome that. You will accomplish your goals, and I know you will do well if you implement at least one or two of these habits. Good luck this year!
