1. One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

A normal day. A group of students. One of them is found dead.

This modern whodunit unfolds like a high school version of Clue, with secrets seeping out like ink on a page. Told through many perspectives, it invites you to trust β€” and then doubt β€” everyone you meet. It's a slow burn that lights up into something unputdownable. This is the first book of an unforgettable trilogy.

My Opinion: I loved how the book maintained its suspense until the very last minute. Each time I though I was on top of things, something new would flip it on its head. The characters were real, imperfect, and multifaceted, and I was curious to see how each of them coped under stress. I found myself thinking about the book long after I had real it β€” and that's always a good indicator.

Mood: Twisty. Tense. Gossip with a deadly edge.

For fans of: Stories where the truth hides in plain sight β€” and every character has something to lose.

2. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

5 years ago, a high school senior was murdered. Everyone thinks the case is closed β€” except Pip, a curious student, who isn't so sure.

A school project turned into an action-packed investigation that peels back layers of deception. Mixed media formats (like journal entries, interview transcripts, and clues) make the story feel real β€” as if you are investigating alongside the main characters. This one pulls you quietly and doesn't let go, and is like a crime podcast in book form.

My Opinion: I was completely hooked from chapter one. Pip is a great and relatable protagonist β€” conscientious, brave, and just crazy enough to leave every chapter buzzing and vibrating with tension. The alternating between formats created a sense that I was alongside her, and it moved rapidly.

I enjoyed how it resolved underlying issues without sacrificing momentum in the mystery. It's the kind of book that makes you try to solve the mystery along with the main character.

Mood: Ominous. Clever. As if you're solving the mystery yourself.

For fans of: True crime podcasts and journal-style storytelling.

3. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Ten strangers. One isolated island. A series of unexplained deaths corresponding to an eerie poem.

In this symbol-packed classic, a chilling invitation brings together a group of strangers β€” all with secrets. As guests begin to die, one by one, suspicion spreads like a wildfire. With no way off the island and no obvious suspect, the tension builds until everyone questions whom they can trust... and who they really are. At the end, Christie will have you rooting for the antagonist β€” even if you don't know who they are.

My Opinion: I found this book genuinely unsettling in the best possible way. The suspense is so expertly constructed that I was absolutely trapped within the words and characters. Even though it was written decades back, the suspense and pacing are still razor-sharp and very much contemporary.

I admired how Agatha Christie provided me with just enough clues to keep guessing, but not quite enough to keep up with the plot. It's a classic for a reason β€” and well deserves its reputation.

Mood: Desolate. Haunting. Like the walls are slowly closing in.

For fans of: Closed-room mysteries, moral dilemmas, dark pasts, and endings that leave your jaw on the floor.

4. Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

A mysterious private academy hidden beneath the mist and mystery. A cold case gone colder. A student who will stop at nothing to find the truth.

Set in the eerie Ellingham Academy, this mystery intertwines two timelines β€” one in the past, where the wife and daughter of the school founder are kidnapped and murdered, and one present, where Stevie, our main character, attempts to crack this case β€” in a slow-burning build of suspense. It's atmospheric, full of puzzles, and perfect for readers who love long-game mysteries with evocative questions.

My Opinion: I loved how this book made the mystery old-fashioned and new at the same time. Stevie is smart, gangly, and totally obsessed with solving it, and this made her so easy to root for. The jumping between timelines kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I enjoyed trying to piece everything together along with her. The ending left me with more questions than answers β€” in just the right way β€” and I couldn't wait to read the next book.

Mood: Gothic. Smart. Haunting in the best way.

For fans of: Boarding schools, cold cases, and brains over brawn.

5. The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

A billion-dollar inheritance. A mansion full of puzzles. A 16 year old girl who wasn't ever supposed to be part of the plan.

This novel is a mix of glamour and danger, with secret passageways, deadly games, and a puzzle that's as much about the past as it is about the players, in order to have Avery (main character) claim the inheritance. Each chapter introduces another complication β€” another clue, another lie β€” to stop Avery from getting this β€œreward”.

My Opinion: This book was pure enjoyment from start to finish. I loved the mix of clever puzzles and suspense β€” it was like I was being played along with Avery. The mystery tweaked around at exactly the moment when I thought I knew where it was headed, and the mansion setting gave the perfect backdrop to all the secrets. It’s one of those books that reads like a binge-worthy show: addictive, fast, and impossible to stop reading.

Mood: Addictive. High-stakes. Glamorous with an edge.

For fans of: Knives Out atmosphere and dark family secret vibes.
