5 Foods That Just Taste Better When It’s Cold Outside

Thu, January 15

Maybe it's because of their cozy flavors or their warming qualities, but certain foods just taste better when it's cold outside. With winter still raging on, here is a list of the five foods that are undeniably superior in cold weather.

1. Soups

Literally any kind of soup, and you cannot go wrong. A tangy tomato soup, creamy broccoli, meaty soups, an umami-rich mushroom soup, sweet corn soup, or even just a simple lentil soup, and you’re set for a cozy evening under your thick blanket.

Adding some bread crumbs to your soup really elevates the entire experience. A little something to nibble on while your throat is soothed by the hot broth? I could never say no to that.

2. Ramen

One of my favourites. A huge bowl of spicy, soupy ramen with some cheese to make it creamy, and some extra toppings like sesame seeds, seaweed paper, and a boiled egg, really makes one of the most comforting dishes on a cold day.

Ramen, like soup, can have multiple variants. A different broth, various types of cheese, and even some veggies (bok choy is one of my favourites; sauteed to perfection).

3. Hot Chocolate

An absolute requirement; a huge mug filled to the brim with chocolatey milk, topped with marshmallows and whipped cream.

Every winter, especially during Christmastime. You can add so many flavours to your hot chocolate if you want to go one step further, like vanilla, hazelnut, butterscotch, or my personal love, caramel syrup.

4. Soft and Steamy Foods

From dumplings and momos to bao buns and stuffed ravioli, food that melts in your mouth and leaves a perfect aftertaste is one of the best kinds of foods, especially for the cold weather.

One of my most preferred foods is soup dumplings. Hot, flavourful broth, and a soft bite to finish it off with.

5. One-bowl Meals

Biryani. The best Indian dish to ever exist. Biryani is rich, aromatic, and indulgent, meaning one serving will just not be enough.

It’s long-grained rice, layered with meat or vegetables covered in spices, slow-cooked in a wooden pot so that the flavours melt into each other. The taste is warm and savoury, with fragrant spices like saffron, cardamom, and cloves hitting first, followed by a deep, comforting heat rather than sharp spice.

These are some of my favourite foods to eat when it’s cold out, and I'm on my sofa with a comfy blanket over me and only a candle lighting the room.
