1. Tutoring

Tutoring is a great way to help others!

To get started to in-person tutoring, reach out to schools and local tutoring organizations and offer to be a tutor. There may also be tutoring intiatives near you; reach out to them! Talk to them about your experience with the subject(s) that you want to teach and make sure to include the times you're available as well.

There are also many organizations dedicated to virtual tutoring. These are a great way to be able to tutor students if you can't find any ways to get started in-person or if you're just looking to do something from home. Some of the organizations include:

  • Schoolhouse: This initiative has a variety of subjects that you can tutor for, and they help you get started with training! Schoolhouse allows you to create volunteering sessions that fit with your schedule and are about topics that you want to teach. They also occasionally open applications for other volunteering roles.
  • Learn To Be: This initiative is pretty similar to Schoolhouse, offering a variety of subjects that you can tutor in as well. You can match with a student who needs help in a subject that you want to teach and who has a similar schedule as yours.
  • Step Up Tutoring: A platform where you tutor elementary and middle school students!

2. Making Cards/Crafts

Making cards and crafts is one of my favorite ways to volunteer! It'a very fun and allows me to be creative, and it's a great way to spread encouragement and support. You can reach out to places such as local hospitals and shelters and offer to make cards and crafts for those there. There are also organizations whose mission involves donating cards and/or crafts, and many of these organizations are very flexible and allow you to volunteer on your own time. Some of these organizations include:

  • Origami For Good: This organization donates origami to a variety of places! You can volunteer to help make origami, and you can even start a chapter to spread their mission further.
  • St. Jude's: They have a page where you can write a virtual card for a patient. This is a very flexible way to help spread some cheer, and they even have many card templates to help you get started.
  • Cards For Kindness: This is a program run by Creative Kindness that donates cards made by volunteers.

3. Helping Out At A Food Bank

Helping out at a food bank is a great way to give back to your community! Look for local food bank near you, and reach out offerring to help out. Some food banks also have a volunteer application that you can fill out to get started. Some national organizations and initiatives related to food security include:

  • Feeding America: They even have a place on their website where you can search for food banks near you.
  • Meals On Wheels: They have several local branches that you could reach out to.
  • FoodFinder: This is a website that helps you find food pantries. You could use this to find pantries near you to contact.

You could also organize a goods drive for a local food bank! You could reach out to places such as schools and the library and put drop-off boxes where people can donate canned goods and other items that the food bank may need. This is a great way to help the bank out and reduce food insecurity in your community.

4. Volunteering At A Library

I know friends who've done this, and it sounds super fun! Your town may have a program for volunteering at the library, or you could email local libraries around you and offer to volunteer.

If there aren't many libraries around you, consider starting a Little Free Library, a program in which a box is set up for people to put and take books. This is a great way to help promote reading.

5. Volunteering At A Museum

This is a super fun way to teach others and help out your community! You could also connect this to your other interests. For example, if you're interested in art, you could volunteer at an art museum. Search for local museums near you, and check if they have a volunteering program or reach out to them.

If there aren't any museums near you, there are plenty of other education-related ways to do volunteering. You could tutor, create pamphlets about history, or even create historical-based presentations to give to local elementary and middle schools.

Conclusion

There are so many ways to volunteer, and hopefully this article helps you get started. No matter how you choose to volunteer, your time and effort will make an impact!
