The Best Dressed Stars at the 2021 Emmy Awards

Culture

On September 20, 2021, the annual Emmy Awards took place. It was a night to celebrate television's best, and while shows like Ted Lasso and The Crown were big winners, there was another standout: the fashion! Viewers got to watch their favorite stars walk the red carpet and pull out all the stops - with some widely successful results. Without further ado, here are the best-dressed stars at the 2021 Emmy Awards!

Anya Taylor-Joy

While she may not have taken home the trophy, the Queen's Gambit star made quite a splash in a Christian Dior Haute Courte silk halterneck dress with a plunging back and canary yellow cape. Working with stylist Paul Burgo, Taylor-Joy elevated the outfit with Tiffany & Co. jewelry, topped off with a classic red lip. And did we mention that she helped design the dress herself?

"I am beyond proud to see a design of mine brought so beautifully to life by the exquisite craftsmanship of the house," wrote the actress on Instagram, adding "My favorite dress I've worn and an evening I will never forget."

Michaela Coel

The actress, writer, and director not only made history last week, but also looked fantastic while doing it. Coel created and starred in HBO's I May Destroy You, becoming the first Black woman to win an Emmy award for Writing for a Limited Series. For the event, she opted for a custom two-piece neon yellow set by Christopher John Rogers, which included a bandeau-style top. Her stunning jewelry, most notably the pearl earrings, finished the look off.

Onstage, Coel dedicated her award to sexual assault victims and gave one of the most empowering speeches of the night. She declared "Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that is uncomfortable. I dare you. In a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to, in turn, feel the need to be constantly visible—for visibility, these days, seems to somehow equate to success—do not be afraid to disappear from it, for us, for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence." One thing's for sure: this may be her first Emmy, but it definitely won't be her last.

Billy Porter

In one of the boldest ensembles seen at this year's ceremony, Billy Porter wore an all-black outfit by Ashi featuring a simple long-sleeved black shirt, high-waisted trousers, and dramatic winged sleeves. He was accessorized with jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz, including a dazzling necklace, diamond bracelets, and even ear cuffs. He was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama series for Pose, his third nomination. In 2019, he became the first Black gay man to win the award, and while he didn't snag a second this time around, his outfit certainly took home the prize.

Sarah Paulson

Notorious for her statement-making fashion moments, presenter Sarah Paulson stunned in a bold and classy red gown by Carolina Herrera. The full skirt and puffed sleeves stood out, especially when paired with sustainably sourced circular diamond earrings by Mateo.

While she wasn't nominated this year, she's currently starring in American Crime Story: Impeachment and is practically unrecognizable in her role as Linda Tripp, making this red carpet appearance all the more astonishing.

Leslie Odom Jr.

The Hamilton actor, nominated this year for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for the Disney+ recorded version of the famous Broadway musical, stunned in a look from the Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2021 Alta Sartoria collection. He paired this outfit with white pave boots, and though he didn't take home the prize, his bright and sparkly number undoubtedly charmed many viewers.

Kerry Washington

Hitting the red carpet in style, Kerry Washington wore a flowing silver gown by Etro, boasting a draped neckline and corset waist. The lovely look was accessorized with diamonds by De Beers Jewelers. She added to the look with custom Stuart Weitzman shoes and pulled it all together with a bright red lip. Washington was nominated last year for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series and had the honor of presenting this year, which she looked great doing!

Yara Shahidi

The Grown-Ish star looked fabulous in a bright green Christian Dior gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline and a flared skirt. She topped it off with a dazzling necklace and definitely stood out as a presenter - a duty which she performed early in the evening, as she had to attend classes at Harvard University the next day. The actress and activist is known to prioritize education, but thankfully she had the time to show up at the Emmys this year and stunned the crowd with her lovely outfit.
