April 16, 2023

Female-fronted comedies are often the most underrated gems that deserve higher praise. So many of these films are witty, smart, hilarious, and oftentimes, brilliant. None of them deserve to fly under the radar, and even the most iconic female-led comedies deserve their moment. Here are just a few of our favorite female-led comedies you need to watch.

Mean Girls

Bring on the drama! This 2004 comedy classic showed audiences a peak in the world of high school through the perspective of teenage girls. Starring Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried, the film had an all-star female-fronted cast, including comedy icons Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

The movie satirizes high school clique culture and, contrary to the title of the film, shows that there is plenty of space for female friendships to blossom. It's now considered something of a classic in the world of teen movies and all-star comedies, due to how ingrained it has become in modern pop culture. So many lines from the film have caught on and become staples in our everyday lingo. Not many other films can say that and for that reason, Mean Girls is super fetch.

Bridesmaids

If you desperately need a good laugh, Bridesmaids is the perfect movie for you. The ensemble of impeccable actresses playing eccentric, quirky, and now iconic characters gives us everything. Even in the moments where you can't stop yourself from bursting into laughter or cringing super hard, the film has a lot of heart in it.

As over-exaggerated and bold as these characters can be, they're also very relatable to viewers. Each of them carries a lot of complexities and, even in serious moments, their humor guides the audience to a powerful message of friendship and acceptance. It's great for a movie night with your girlfriends and the perfect sleepover watch.

Pitch Perfect

Pitch Perfect shines a light on the world of college acapella groups and gives a hilarious take on the entire acapella scene through the Barden Bellas, a woman's acapella group that faces many hurdles. For one, they seem to be the underdogs when it comes to their competition. The movie follows the group through their misadventures and the chaos that ensues on their road to acapella glory.

It's full of wholesome female friendships, a surprisingly catchy soundtrack, and smart humor you won't be able to resist. The movie spun two sequels and a spin-off television series, so it's safe to say that many took note of the brilliance of the film. What really sticks out and made this movie one audiences couldn't get enough of was the female-fronted cast that carried the trilogy.

From Anna Kendrick to Brittany Snow to Esther Dean to Elizabeth Banks, the level of talent the women bring to this film is truly extraordinary. Each of them complements the other and brings something exciting and fresh to the film series.

Little

Little is a highly underrated comedy, starring Marsai Martin, Issa Rae, and Regina Hall. Think Freaky Friday with a bit of a twist: Jordan (Regina Hall) turns into her thirteen-year-old self (played by Marsai Martin) just before a moment that could change her entire career and life trajectory forever. Now, Jordan must turn to her assistant, April (Issa Rae), or else she's in big trouble.

It's no surprise this movie is hilarious when the cast truly brings it to Little. Issa Rae, Marsai Martin, and Regina Hall are effortlessly entertaining and the perfect trio for this well-rounded comedy. It's super funny, carries a lot of meaning, and is a film you won't regret watching.

Easy A

Led by the impeccable Emma Stone, Easy A is the 2010 comedy film and modern retelling of The Scarlet Letter. The film features an all-star cast, including Stanley Tucci, but the real comedic genius is found within the female characters, including the likes of Aly Michalka (of Aly & AJ), Amanda Bynes, and Lisa Kudrow. This film combines iconic teen movie tropes we know and love and witty humor that has stood the test of time. Many still view this as a modern classic comedy of the 2010s and it's very easy to see why it resonates with so many still to this day.

Ocean's 8

Looking for a comedy that has a bit of action and suspense in it? Ocean's 8 has the perfect mix of mystery, action, and a whole lot of laughs. The ensemble female cast brings all the fierce girl power to the film and their chemistry as a group is undeniable. From superstar Rihanna to Oscar winner Sandra Bullock, each lady adds their own touch to this movie that makes it an overall 10/10 female-led action comedy.

From suspense-filled action sequences to highly quotable and hilarious lines that will be stuck in your head for days, Ocean's 8 is a truly remarkable film. It's also important to note how this film brings a group of powerful women together and strays away from negative stereotypes, showcasing complex female characters and highlighting the importance of women working together as a team.
